I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Lorene Pearson Wilson during a recent history lecture at Dublin Carnegie, where she shared a special piece of local history with me.

As a high school student in 1968, she was one of the first young women from her school to ride in the St. Patrick’s Parade. The festival was three years old.

In the days before the Miss St. Patrick’s crown, local high school homecoming queens reigned over the festivities, and Ms. Pearson was part of that tradition.

She later sent me this photo from that day, and I’m so grateful she did.

As we celebrate Black History Month and look ahead to St. Patrick’s season, stories like Ms. Wilson’s remind us that the traditions we enjoy today are shaped by the people who came before us.
