Traditionally Chriskindlmarkets began in Germany, the oldest one being the Striezelelmarkt in Dresden and dating back 600 years. Originally held to give craftsmen a chance to sell goods for Christmastime, it became a chance for the community to come together for the benefit of all.
The figure of Christkind was developed by church reformer, Martin Luther in the 16th century to take the place of St. Nicholas. Christkind was believed to be a young, angelic child though as time went on tradition settled with a golden haired, teen-aged girl adorned in billowing white and gold. As legend has it, the Christkind came the night before Christmas secretly bringing gifts to leave for families under their Christmas trees then signaling her departure by the ringing of a small bell. In keeping with tradition the Christkind will open the Christkindlmarket reciting a prologue and welcoming visitors. Children will be bestowed gifts and both the young and young at heart captured by her presence.
Memories for the Whole Family
Children will be breathless with anticipation waiting to ride the Polar Express each Saturday, navigating it’s guests through dazzlingly decorated downtown Dublin. Watch their eyes fill with glee as they have the chance to decorate gingerbread hearts, cover fruit with chocolate, decorate candles, make homemade ornaments, and so much more! Families will have the opportunity to gather around and hear the reading of Christmas stories, watch performances, and take photos with Santa Claus!
Traditionally beginning the end of November and continuing through the week of Christmas, these markets were held to give craftsmen the opportunity to sell their goods for Christmas. For vendor application, click here: 2018_Vendor Application -Christmas Market
