Art of Storytelling
Stories come to life during a Dublin audio tour! History becomes personal at four audio stations recounting sixteen stories at four historic sites in Downtown Dublin:
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Park
- Dublin Visitors Center
- Old City Cemetery
- Dublin Carnegie
The Downtown Dublin Mobile & Audio Tour, funded by a $10,000 Tourism Product Development Grant awarded from the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Tourism Division and sponsored by Fairview Park Hospital, bring new life to the history and culture of Dublin.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Park
Listen as the art of storytelling reveals four stories of the past, bringing the era of the Civil Rights Movement to life at the audio station installed at Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Park. Stories include:
- Button 1 : Young man reading Dr. King’s speech given in Dublin on April 17, 1944 entitled The Negro and the Constitution.
- Button 2: Audio developed by GDEcD for the Civil Rights app
- Button 3: Interview with local Dublin leader, Julie Driger, relating her experiences marching with Dr. King in St. Augustine, FL during the Civil Rights Movement. Mrs. Driger is a member of First African Baptist Church and part of the MLK Monument Committee in Dublin. These stories are engrossing, personal, and capture the personal experiences of one young women during an integral moment in Georgia and US history.
- Button 4: Audio developed around Dr. King’s retelling of his experiences in Dublin and his return trip to Atlanta, when for the first time, he was asked to relinquish his seat to a white passenger and step to the back of the bus.
Dublin Visitors Center
- Button 1: History of The Skyscraper
- Button 2: Story behind the plaque mysteriously placed on the Skyscraper telling of Kcymaerxthaere. Created by Geographer-at-Large Eames Demetrios, Kcymaerxthaere is a “parallel universe that intersects with much of our linear Earth, but with different stories, creatures, peoples, even laws of physics and qualities of existence.”
- Button 3: History of Old Post Office with interviews of the current owner, Jeff Davis, retelling the story of his first experience visiting the Post Office at 5 years old.
- Button 4: History of Hick’s Building incorporating Strickland’s Boots and Minute Grill, two of downtown Dublin’s oldest businesses.
Old City Cemetery
- Button 1: The story of Revolutionary War soldier, Thomas McCall, who is buried here.
- Button 2: The story of John Sawyer, the founder of Dublin.
- Button 3: The story of Nancy Duncan, a Daughter of the American Revolution buried in the cemetery.
- Button 4: History of Captain Smith Hardy House, which is located next to the Cemetery and is being restored by John C. Hall, ancestor of Frank Cork who helped construct The Skyscraper. Captain Smith Hardy was a commander in the Civil War. This is Dublin’s second oldest existing home.
